Building a Daily Routine with West African Superfoods
Teilen
Most people buy a superfood powder, use it enthusiastically for ten days, and then find the jar at the back of the cupboard eight months later. The problem is almost never the product. It is that the routine was built for a version of the day that does not exist.
Here is a version built for the day that does.
The principle: attach, do not add
A new habit survives when it attaches to an existing one. You already make a hot drink in the morning. You already eat something in the evening. Attach to those rather than inventing a new slot.
A workable week
Morning, with breakfast. One to two teaspoons of baobab into yoghurt, kefir or a smoothie. It is tart, it takes ten seconds, and it does not require you to change anything else. If you do not eat breakfast, whisk it into a glass of cold water with a little honey.
Mid-morning, instead of the second coffee. A cup of bissap, made cold the night before and kept in the fridge, or drunk warm. Sharp enough to feel like something.
Lunch or dinner, at the table. One teaspoon of moringa stirred into soup, dal, stew or a bowl of rice after cooking, never during. Bitter, so it wants something sweet or acidic alongside.
Late afternoon. Pure cocoa whisked with hot water, unsweetened or barely sweetened. This is the one that replaces a biscuit habit most effectively, because it is genuinely satisfying without being sweet.
Evening. Kinkeliba, simmered, no caffeine. Or ginger juice over ice if you want something with more edge and it is warm out.
Quantities
Start smaller than you think. One teaspoon, not one tablespoon. These are concentrated whole foods with strong flavours, and the most common reason people abandon them is that they made the first attempt unpleasant.
What to skip
Skip the idea of doing all of it. Pick two. A routine of two things you actually keep beats a routine of six you abandon in a fortnight.
Skip anything that requires equipment you have to fetch from a cupboard. Everything above needs a spoon and a glass.
Skip the pressure. Missing three days does not undo anything and there is no streak to protect.
A note on expectations
These are foods. They belong in a varied diet alongside everything else you eat, and we are not going to tell you what they will do for you, because in the EU making unauthorised health claims about foods is illegal and because we do not know your circumstances.
What we can say is that they taste good, they come from somewhere real, and a daily habit built on things you enjoy is more durable than one built on things you have been told to do.
