Pharmacy Supplements or Whole Foods? What the Capsule Leaves Out

Walk into any pharmacy and you will find a wall of capsules, each offering a nutrient in isolated, standardised, precisely dosed form. It is an appealing proposition: the active part, without the bulk. The question worth asking is what was left behind during the isolation — and whether it mattered.

The food matrix

Nutrition research increasingly uses the term "food matrix" to describe something researchers kept observing: a nutrient inside its original food often behaves differently from the same nutrient taken alone.

A whole plant contains its target nutrient alongside fibre, fats, hundreds of secondary compounds, minerals and enzymes. These are not inert packaging. Fibre modulates the rate at which things are absorbed. Fats carry fat-soluble vitamins across the gut wall. Some polyphenols appear to work in combination rather than individually.

The clearest illustration came from beta-carotene. Diets rich in carotenoid-containing vegetables associate consistently with better health outcomes. Large trials of isolated beta-carotene supplements did not reproduce that benefit and, in some smoker cohorts, produced worse outcomes. The nutrient was the same. The context was not.

Where capsules genuinely win

This is not an argument that supplements are useless — that would be its own kind of dishonesty. Isolated supplementation is the right tool when:

  • There is a diagnosed deficiency. Vitamin D in northern winters, B12 on a vegan diet, iron in diagnosed anaemia, folate in pregnancy. These are medical situations with established protocols.
  • The required dose is not achievable from food. Some therapeutic doses simply exceed what you could eat.
  • A doctor has prescribed it. Which is the point at which this stops being a lifestyle question.

What isolated supplementation is not good at is general wellbeing in the absence of a deficiency. That is where the evidence is weakest and where the market is largest.

The manufacturing question nobody asks

Here is the part that surprises people. Many pharmacy supplements are not made by the brand on the box. The active ingredients are produced by a small number of large contract manufacturers, sold on, blended, encapsulated and branded. The premium French-sounding label and the discount supermarket version can originate from the same production line.

Beyond the active ingredient, a capsule contains excipients — bulking agents, anti-caking agents, flow agents, capsule shell material, sometimes colourings. These are legal and generally inert. They are also, by weight, often the majority of what you are swallowing.

What a whole-food format offers instead

Baobab fruit powder is an example worth looking at. It contains naturally occurring vitamin C — which contributes to normal immune system function, normal collagen formation and the reduction of tiredness and fatigue — alongside a high proportion of fibre, potassium, calcium and a range of polyphenols. You are getting a food, with its structure intact.

Moringa leaf works similarly: protein, minerals and carotenoids in their original arrangement rather than extracted and recombined.

These are ordinary foods with good nutritional density. That is a modest claim, and it is the accurate one.

A reasonable position

Use isolated supplements for diagnosed gaps, under advice. Use whole foods for everything else, because a food carries its own context and because you can see what it is. And be sceptical of any capsule promising a general benefit without a specific mechanism — that is marketing occupying the space where evidence should be.
