Single-Origin Superfoods: Why We Name the Region

In speciality coffee, naming the farm is normal. In chocolate, naming the origin has been standard for two decades. In superfood powders, almost nobody names anything, and the category is worse for it.

What single-origin actually means

It means the material in the pack comes from one identified geographic source and, usually, one harvest. Not a blend of lots from three countries averaged for consistency.

The distinction is not academic. Blending is the default in this category precisely because it hides variation, and variation is where the information is.

Why blending is the industry default

Three reasons, all rational from the seller's side.

Consistency. Customers complain when a product looks or tastes different from last time. Blending eliminates that complaint.

Availability. A single origin runs out. A blend can be reformulated from whatever is in the warehouse.

Price. Buying on the open spot market is cheaper than maintaining a sourcing relationship with a specific cooperative.

None of this is deceptive. It is just optimised for something other than the thing we care about.

What you give up by blending

You give up the ability to say anything true about the product's character. You cannot describe a flavour profile if the composition changes quarterly. You cannot trace a quality problem back to its cause. You cannot pay a specific grower more for better work, because you do not know which grower did it.

And you lose the connection between the customer and a place. A pack that says Product of Africa is a pack that says nothing.

What it costs us

Working single-origin has real downsides and we would rather state them than pretend otherwise.

  • Batches vary. Colour, intensity and taste shift between harvests. This is normal for an agricultural product and we do not correct it.
  • Things run out. When a harvest is finished, it is finished until the next one.
  • It costs more per kilo, and that shows in the price.
  • It caps how fast we can grow, because growth is limited by real fields rather than by warehouse availability.

Why we take that trade

Because the alternative is building a brand on top of an anonymous supply chain, which means the brand is a label and nothing else. If ATTOTE means anything, it has to mean a specific relationship with specific places in Cote d'Ivoire and West Africa.

That is harder, slower and more expensive. It is also the only version of this business worth building.

ATTOTE Original sources African superfoods and natural beverages from Cote d'Ivoire and West Africa, and ships across France and Europe.
