Everyday Energy: The Unglamorous Fundamentals, and Where Food Fits

The market for energy is enormous and mostly dishonest. Powders, shots and capsules promise transformation, and the overwhelming majority deliver either caffeine or nothing.

The reality is duller and more useful: persistent low energy usually comes from a small number of well-understood causes, most of which are not solved by buying anything.

Before anything else — fatigue that is severe, sudden or persistent is a reason to see a doctor. Anaemia, thyroid disorders, sleep apnoea, depression and diabetes all present this way, and none of them is a nutrition problem.

The four fundamentals

Sleep, in quantity and regularity

Nothing else on this list competes. Most adults need seven to nine hours, and regularity of timing matters nearly as much as total duration — a consistent schedule stabilises the circadian rhythm that governs alertness. Chronic short sleep cannot be offset by diet, exercise or any supplement.

Hydration

Even mild dehydration measurably reduces concentration and increases perceived effort. Most people are somewhat under-hydrated most of the time, and the fix is free. The practical obstacle is that plain water is boring — which is precisely where an infusion you actually enjoy earns its place.

Iron status

Iron deficiency is one of the most common causes of genuine, persistent fatigue, particularly in menstruating women. It is diagnosed with a blood test, not guessed at. Do not supplement iron speculatively — excess iron is harmful. Get tested.

Where food helps: vitamin C substantially increases the absorption of non-haem iron from plant sources. Pairing an iron-containing meal with a vitamin C source is a well-established and genuinely effective practice.

Blood sugar stability

The afternoon collapse most office workers know is often the tail end of a high-refined-carbohydrate lunch. Meals combining protein, fat and fibre produce a flatter curve and a steadier afternoon.

The authorised nutrient statements

Under EU rules, only specific claims tied to specific nutrients may be made. The relevant ones here:

  • Vitamin C contributes to normal energy-yielding metabolism and to the reduction of tiredness and fatigue.
  • Iron contributes to normal oxygen transport in the body and to the reduction of tiredness and fatigue.
  • Magnesium contributes to normal energy-yielding metabolism and normal muscle function.
  • B vitamins contribute to normal energy-yielding metabolism and normal psychological function.

Note what these say. Nutrients contribute to normal function. They do not create energy above normal in someone who is not lacking them. That distinction is the entire difference between nutrition and marketing.

Where West African foods genuinely fit

Honestly and modestly:

Baobab provides vitamin C, which contributes to the reduction of tiredness and fatigue and improves iron absorption from plant foods. Taken alongside an iron-containing meal, that is a real and specific mechanism.

Moringa contributes minerals and carotenoids as part of a varied diet.

Hibiscus and ginger infusions make hydration pleasant, which is not a trivial contribution — the intervention people actually sustain beats the one they abandon.

Cocoa contains theobromine and small amounts of caffeine, producing a mild, gentle stimulant effect quite different from coffee's sharper one.

None of these foods will fix tiredness caused by insufficient sleep, an untreated medical condition, chronic stress or a diet that is short overall. Anyone claiming otherwise is selling something.

Fix the sleep. Get the blood test. Then eat well — and let food be food.
